Unlocking the Power of Dieta: Your Comprehensive Guide
This brief yet comprehensive guide serves as an introduction for those who feel called to practice with Ayahuasca, the revered mother of teacher plants. The insights presented here stem from over a decade of drinking and sharing Ayahuasca medicine, enriched by significant contributions from the broader Ayahuasca community. While numerous factors can influence one’s experience with Ayahuasca, we can, for practical purposes, summarize them into two main elements:
Physical Condition
The physical state of the body determines how effectively it can receive Ayahuasca as a medicine with cleansing and healing potential. It is crucial to ensure that your physical condition is optimal for participating in the ceremony.
Psychological or Spiritual Condition
The mental state helps activate the potential of Ayahuasca medicine. Though we often refer to the body and mind as separate, they are interconnected and mutually dependent.
The following guidelines aim to empower and deepen your practice with Ayahuasca. It is important to read and consider them carefully, both before and after the ceremonies, to enhance your experience with this sacred medicine.
Physical and Mental Preparation
The body is a vessel. Everything we consume—energy, thoughts, food, and physical activities—leaves a trace within us. The body absorbs elements from its surroundings, impacting us physically, mentally, psychologically, and spiritually. As part of the energetic system that receives and transmits energy, the body is connected to the whole of life. It absorbs and filters but can become clogged, blocked, or saturated by what it consumes. Over time, negative energy from these sources accumulates and significantly impacts our well-being. Therefore, it’s crucial to keep the body as clean as possible to facilitate optimal energetic exchange with the environment.
By diligently preparing our minds and bodies before the Ayahuasca experience, we create a clearer, less obstructed path for the Ayahuasca medicine to connect with us and perform its work. While perfect preparation may not be achievable for everyone, making the best effort within your capacity is essential. For the week leading up to the ceremony, abstain from sexual activity. Each of us possesses a reservoir of energy that protects, nurtures, and guides the plant medicines as they work. Sexual activity, including any exchange of bodily fluids, is a powerful exchange that can deplete your energy reservoir, thereby inhibiting the effectiveness of the plant medicines in their teaching.

Aya Nutritional Diet
The recommended dieta, or diet, for Ayahuasca is light and healthy, with minimal or no animal products. These dietary principles align with the native Peruvian Ayahuasca tradition and are crucial for cleansing the body before and after the Ayahuasca ceremony. So, what foods should be avoided, and what should be consumed? Here are the most important guidelines:
Foods to Avoid:
– Pork and Alcohol:** The most critical to avoid.
– Red or Heavy Meats (pork, beef, sheep, tuna, eel):** Avoid for one week before and after the ceremony.
– Strong Alcohol, Beer, Wine:** Avoid for one week before and after.
– Spicy Foods (chilies or red pepper):** Avoid for two days before.
– Fermented Foods (pickles, herring, anchovies, old cheese):** Avoid for one day before and after.
– Salt and Sugar/Honey:** Consume in moderation three days before and after.
Recommended Foods:
– Fresh or Cooked Vegetables**
– Legumes, Beans, and Peas**
– Rice, Buckwheat, Oats, Barley, or Other Cereals**
– Fresh Fruits and Juices**
– Olive Oil or Ghee:** Use instead of other cooking oils and avoid fried food.
– Some Fresh Organic Eggs:** Avoid on the day of the ceremony.
The simplest approach is to follow a light vegetarian diet for three days before and after the ceremony, with moderate to low levels of salt, sugar, and fat. Eating only raw food on the day of the ceremony is highly recommended.
What do you eat on the d Ayahuasca ceremony?
For the day of the Ayahuasca ceremony, the ideal dieta begins with a simple vegetarian breakfast, followed by a light vegetarian lunch. In some cases, a vegan diet or even fasting may be recommended. Avoid spicy foods such as chili, as well as anything containing caffeine (coffee, tea, soda). Eggs, dairy, and heavy sweets should also be avoided. Drink only water or herbal tea.
Do not eat after 3:00 pm, or at least five hours before the session. You can drink water or herbal tea. Some fruits are okay to consume at the end of the ceremony if there is no nausea or dizziness.
For individuals with unstable or problematic digestion, it is recommended to avoid certain foods at least a week before the ceremony. This includes:
– All dairy products such as cheese and cream-based items (yogurt and kefir are exceptions)
– White bread
– Products high in gluten or butter**
– Sugary carbohydrates like cakes and cookies
If you are unsure about what to eat or are concerned about your digestion, the universal recommendation is to consume raw fruits and vegetables and drink juices and water. This approach provides the body with a very light feeling and can help reduce the intensity of purging during the ceremony.
What should I do to prepare my mind and spirit for the ceremony?
Through an Ayahuasca experience, we can break the limitations imposed on us by society, and narrow in on the center of what is the truth. At the same time, however, the potential of an Aya experience is constrained by the mindset one brings to the ceremony. Ayahuasca is a “guide” showing us the possibilities, but ultimately we are the ones that help those possibilities manifest. This is why an Ayahuasca ceremony is most beneficial when approached with a humble heart, clear intentions, and an open mind. Having a clear intention for experiencing Ayahuasca is important if you wish to gain the depth and transformational power it can have. Prior to the ceremony, it is helpful to consider your intentions closely. Take some time to sit quietly and ask yourself some questions:
- What would you like to change in your life?
- Are there things burdening your mind or spirit that you would like to resolve?
- What do you want to clarify about yourself, your relationships, or your life’s path?
